Forbes’ three richest: Carlos Slim Helu, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett
It marked the first time since 1994 that the world’s richest wasn’t from U.S.
Number of billionaires in the world rose in the past year, from 793 to 1,011
Of the debuting billionaires, 62 were from Asia, signaling economic recovery there
Forbes magazine released its annual list of the world’s richest people Wednesday, and for only the second time since 1995, Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ name was not at the top.
This year, the title of “World’s Richest” went to Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim, with a net worth of $53.5 billion.
Slim, whose holding company America Movil contains a sprawling collection of telecom assets, is the first non-American to be declared Forbes’ richest person since 1994, when Japanese real estate kingpin Yoshiaki Tsutsumi held that honor. (He has since disappeared from the list entirely).
But Slim’s financial edge over Gates is, well, slim, at least by billionaire standards — just $500 million. A $1 increase in Microsoft shares, the compilers of the Forbes list noted at a press conference Wednesday, could send Gates’ net worth ahead of Slim’s.
Also, were it not for his extensive philanthropy, Gates would have a net worth in the ballpark of $80 billion, Forbes’ Matthew Miller estimated.
Gates is the world’s second richest person, with a net worth of $53 billion. Warren Buffett came in third this year, with a net worth of $47 billion.
Billionaires’ total net worth rose 50 percent to $3.6 trillion. After sharply contracting the previous year, the total number of billionaires also increased from 793 to 1,011, Forbes’ list showed. The number is still lower than the record 1,125 billionaires recorded in 2008.
Not only are there more billionaires than last year, but the ones at the top are even richer than last year. The top 10 billionaires have a combined net worth of $342 billion, up from $254 billion in 2009, Forbes said.
In terms of the international scorecard, the United States still boasts more billionaires than any other country — 403, or nearly 40 percent of all billionaires. New York, similarly, has more billionaires than any city on the globe.
But America’s billionaires have not rebounded from the recession as strongly as other countries’ billionaires.
The United States “is not doing as well as the rest of the world in coming back,” publisher Steve Forbes said.
As U.S. billionaires’ dominance of Forbes’ list wanes, Asian countries are seeing their ranks of billionaires swell, especially China. Mainland China has the second-most billionaires after the United States, overtaking Russia for the first time. Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and India also saw significant upticks in their billionaire tallies.
Elsewhere, Turkey’s billionaire community expanded notably, jumping to 28 members from 13, while Western Europe, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates underperformed by comparison.
As in years past, the Forbes list showed a severe gender imbalance in the world’s billionaire population
Eighty-nine of the 1,011 billionaires are women. Fourteen of those female billionaires are self-made, including Oprah Winfrey, whose net worth dipped $300 million to $2.4 billion. Half of the world’s self-made female billionaires are from China.
For three years running, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, 25, secured the distinction of being the list’s youngest billionaire, climbing to the 212th rung with a net worth of $4 billion.
On the opposite end of the age spectrum is Switzerland’s 99-year-old Walter Haefner, ranked 287th.
The year’s biggest winner was Brazilian minerals magnate Eike Batista, who added $19.5 billion to his net worth in 12 months, enough to catapult him to eighth place on the list, from 61st. Modesty is apparently not one of Batista’s many possessions: He has vowed to become the world’s richest person.
On the flip side, German heiress Madeleine Schickedanz’s bank account had a hideous year. After clocking in as Forbes’ 142nd richest person in 2007, she plunged into relative penury and now “claims to be living on several thousand dollars a month,” said Forbes senior editor Luisa Kroll.
Do UFOs Really Exist? Where do the ETs come from? What is the implication of this discovery to our world?
The UFO Controversary continues…
UFOs — Extra-terrestrials — Visited by beings from other worlds — Abductions — Lights in the Sky…. these are all terms or phrases to describe this most intriguing world mystery. A subject that has inspired writers of science fiction for over the last fifty years and which still captivates us through all the movies, films and television programs that are aired throughout the world.
In South America, the people totally believe in UFOs, because most of them either know someone who has seen a UFO or have had an experience themselves. And these people are disappointed if they missed the sighting. A few years ago, in Mexico City, UFOs will appear almost daily over a period of a week. Or what about the Dogon tribe in Africa that has exact star maps of a double star system in Sirius of which one of these stars can not be seen by the naked eye?
It is obvious that the worldwide sightings of UFOs represents one of the most major discoveries for our world as its implications are staggering .. yet, scientists in the U.S. and the western world, avoid this subject like the plague. Can we therefore assume by this silence that this is a general policy or admission that UFOs are real?
Our mission at the World Mystery Research Center is to work with other UFO organizations and serious researchers to uncover the best information we can share with the general public. We have within our own organizaton some in-house expertise and will avail our own resources to help and pursue research this area as well. However, we can categorically state that a pure scientific approach will not provide a complete understanding.

The legendary original Edge Tremolo bridge was one of the most reliable double-locking systems for 80’s shred guitarists. Paul was a heavy whammy user in that period.
Dimarzio® PAF-Pro® Humbuckers and a true single coil FS-1™ are the mighty combination for Paul’s searing, shredding and even crystal clear tone. All can be dialed in with the Ibanez Sprit-5 switching system.
The traditional neck joint has a metal plate with 4 screws, yet the tilt joint still offers easy upper fret access. Paul likes this original neck joint for its tonal characteristics, and it can be found on the latest PGM401 model.

The rise of the tablet and augmented reality as well as broadband-enabled TV – our technology team predicts the hot trends for 2010.

2010 is set to be a bumper year for 3D televisionPhoto: REUTERS
Rise of the tablet computer (led by Apple)
If the rumoured Apple tablet computer does make an appearance next year, as is widely expected, there’s a good chance that it will transform the market in the same way that the iPhone has done.
We can’t be sure that the tablet even exists because Apple never comments on rumours but there is good reason to suspect that the device will feature a 10” LCD screen and resemble a large iPhone.
Apple are not alone in the tablet computing space, of course. Microsoft’s Courier tablet – another device that exists only in rumour – looks promising and offers two screens, making it more like a giant Nintendo DS. Budget computer maker Asustek are thought to be working on a tablet and so are Dell.
Not all tablets are mythical, however. You can buy an Archos 9 for £449 and be working on one right away. Tablets offer the advantage of a netbook-sized screen but are far lighter. The major disadvantage is the lack of a physical keyboard. Many people find a touchscreen keyboard difficult to use for long periods. Still, tablets are great for video, internet use and, if and when publishers get their act together, could offer an innovative way of reading newspapers and magazines. The latter possibility makes them a real threat to the growing ebook reader market.
Future of on-demand TV
This year will hopefully see broadband-enabled TV finally come to the living room of the masses. It’s long been heralded as the future of TV, but apart from the tech-savvy who have wired their homes appropriately, or invested in some new-fangled gizmos, there hasn’t yet been an easy device which has replicated the success of Freeview in 2002. Project Canvas, the IPTV venture backed by BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT and TalkTalk, is hoping to do just that. Dubbed as Freeview II – it is essentially a Freeview set top box with an internet connection. So when watching the BBC, there will then be a way of going through to the BBC’s website and its offerings – such as iPlayer. There are also rumours of the partners signing deals to get non-Freeview-related content on there too – such as LoveFilm. If it gets the all clear from the BBC Trust – and is as neat a proposition as it sounds – it should mean the end of sitting in front of the television with a laptop in tow. With each broadcaster integrating social networking applications – it should, fingers-crossed, be a truly on demand and 360 degree TV experience in the living room.
Make or break for real-time stuff
Twitter has been the single biggest technology story of 2009 – now the micro-blogging site is beginning to charge businesses for using it and Google and Bing are starting to include tweets in their search results. Those two facts mean that any doubter can be sure that “real-time” social websites such as Facebook and Twitter are here to stay. But the big question has to be how to gather their short-form contents together in such a way that it becomes genuinely useful – at the moment, the wisdom of Twitter is hard to revisit. The solution is far from obvious, however: even more so than the internet in general, Twitter especially is full of other people’s opinions, and so presenting them in such a way that their relative merits are obvious is almost impossible. What does seem certain to continue, however, is the continued predominance of individual influencers, from Stephen Fry to Ashton Kutcher. And more and more pieces of data are likely to become available instantly – the Conservative Party’s Shadow Cabinet expenses are already available on Google Docs, for instance, as soon as they’re submitted. As the real-time web becomes home to information as well as opinion, it will become even more influential. Matt Warman
3D TV
It’s set to be a bumper year for 3D television, with both Sky and Panasonic confirming that they will release 3D TVs, and Sky announcing that it is launching a dedicated 3D channel. The satellite broadcaster will even be filming the World Cup in 3D, although those games won’t be broadcast live. But a question mark remains over whether consumers will be as willing to embrace this new technology as the manufacturers and content providers are. Although Sky’s 3D channel will be available through a normal Sky HD box, viewers will need a new television to enjoy 3D pictures. The manufacturers have not yet confirmed how much their 3D sets will cost, but expect it the technology to be very expensive, at least initially. Early adopters with more money than sense and Premier League footballers are likely to be the only people able to join the 3D revolution in its first year. Then there’s the small matter of those glasses; yes, you will need to wear special specs while watching TV, at least until the next generation of 3D televisions hit the market, which will have screens that do the 3D rendering automatically. While 2010 will be a big year for 3D, it’s just the start of the story, and it’s clear that the technology will need to overcome some significant hurdles before consumers are as excited by the prospect of 3D as the film studios and consumer electronics companies so clearly are.
Augmented reality in information and games
GPS and compasses in mobile phones have made augmented reality, the layering of digital models and data over moving pictures of your surroundings, not just possible but already useful in an early-adopting geeky sense.
There are already applications for iPhones and Android mobiles that help with finding restaurants (always a popular start), commemorating terrorist attacks, performing running repairs on armoured vehicles and identifying local architecture.
Location-based games will spread, littering the landscape with puzzles, monsters and easter eggs, and navigation displays will move from bird’s-eye-view map-based diagrams to arrows on the road.
Forgetful people will find their lives transformed as their phones remind them of the names of the people they meet and blank walls will become huge, constantly-updated displays.
The goggles that would make the world an always-on augmented place as you move around it are still purely military technology for now, but your phone screen will become a much more interesting place in 2010.
Fresh off the CES 2010 show floor, we look at the top 10 best gadgets that stole our attention more than any others this year.
CES lives on. Despite slashed budgets, lower attendee numbers, and the lack of one show-dominating product, this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has been one to remember. After returning home, recouping about 34 hours of sleep debt, and reviewing our experiences, we’ve rounded up the top ten items from this show that stand out as the best manufacturers have to offer. From 3D TVs to next-generation e-readers, these were the products that we can’t wait to see on store shelves in 2010.
Asus NX90
We never would have predicted that the perpetually budget-minded crew at Asus would team up with the no-expenses-spared audiophiles at Bang & Olufsen, but the lovechild of their oddball relationship is one to be admired. The 18-inch notebook features an extra-long form factor with side speakers that totally overlap the keyboard, a clean metallic design, and – for some reason – duals touch pads. Don’t laugh – they’re more fun and practical than you think, and Asus claims that eventually software will allow you to use them as turntables.
Toshiba Cell TVs
We knew from the first day of press conferences that this would be the TV to see at CES 2010. Besides using the same type of processor used in the PlayStation 3 and offering native 3D capability, Toshiba has packed it full of every feature we ever could have dreamed of (and some we probably wouldn’t have). A side-by-side video demonstration making last year’s stellar SV670 look weak pretty much sealed the deal for us on the series, although we’re still braced for prices that could suck the magic right out of our early infatuation.
Samsung LED 9000 Series
Just when we thought Toshiba’s “Touch of Color” design was getting a little stale, the company threw it away and produced this beauty, which has to be about the slickest HDTV we’ve ever seen. The set is as thin as a number two pencil, the bezel has been clad entirely in brushed metal, and the criss-crossed spider legs remind us of something from a museum. Oh yea, and like every high-end set this year, it will do 3D right out of the box.
Plastic Logic Que E-Reader
Ignoring the $649 price tag ($799 if you want lifetime data connectivity from AT&T), this will be the e-reader to own in 2010. The flat body reaches almost sci-fi-like thinness, and because the 11.6-inch screen has touch capability, the bezel is entirely free of buttons except for “home,” just like an iPhone or iPod Touch. Plastic Logic has also forged partnerships with over 300 newspapers and magazines to have their content specially formatted for the device to preserve the print-like formatting – an important aspect of those publications that is largely lost on other e-readers.
Panasonic 3D Camcorder
Panasonic’s 3D plasma sets get just as much credit as the other 3D TVs at the show, but we chose their 3D camcorder for our Best of CES round up simple because nobody else has shown one yet. While production-quality 3D cameras have been around for a while (see: Avatar), Panasonic will be one of the first to bring 3D video to the consumer level when this camcorder launches in fall 2010 for $21,000.
Spring Design Alex E-Reader
The Kindle-sized e-ink screen on the Alex may not scream of innovation, but the full-color touch screen below running Android certainly does, blurring the line between mini computer and e-reader. The Alex offers all the benefits of e-ink (smooth text, low power consumption), with most of the benefits of a smartphone (e-mail, Web browsing, calendar functions) as well. The size of the LCD screen also puts to the Barnes & Noble Nook to shame, and unlike our first Nook review unit, it actually worked!
Motorola BackFlip
The second Android-powered device on the list gets major props for its innovative design – the keyboard is actually on the rear, and flips over backwards for typing while facing the screen. Motorola also gives this potentially-flimsy design the build quality to feel rock solid, and some clever uses like table-top mode, which turns the phone into a makeshift alarm clock when you position the screen 90 degrees to the base.
D-Link Boxee Box
The powerful HTPC software we cherished when it was in alpha is finally all grown up. We could take or leave the mirrored cube design of the Box, but the real innovation might be the remote: super-simple directional pad and media controls up top, full QWERTY keyboard on the bottom. How did no one think of this sooner?
Lenovo X100e
Lenovo’s earliest netbooks seemed more or less like rebadged versions of equally flimsy competitors, but the X100e actually feels solid enough to wear the ThinkPad name. Lenovo also reached for AMD’s Neo processor over the anemic Intel Atom, a high-res 11.6-inch screen, and a full-size keyboard that feels every bit as ThinkPad as the old X61 we compared it to. In fact, we might not pin it as a netbook at all, except for that glorious $449 price tag.
Kodak PlaySport
It should be no secret that we’re fans of Kodak’s Zi8 – in fact, we shot every last minute of our CES 2010 video coverage on them. The PlaySport uses the same proven guts and optics, but wraps them in a more durable, drop-resistant, waterproof case for dragging to all corners of the Earth without worry. We also think they’ve improved the interface this time around, and while durability has shot skyward, price has somehow plummeted even further to a wallet-friendly $149.

Kurang Air, Bahaya Bagi Darah
7. Efek relaksasi
